So you’ve had your website up for ages and its just not working and you aren’t sure why. Here are 3 reasons you may not have thought of as to why its just not working for you.
- Your Opinion Doesn’t Matter
Yes that’s right, it doesn’t actually matter what you – the business owner think of your own website. Yes, you want it to be professional and representative of you, and yes it does need to reflect your business.
But at the end of the day, what matters most is what your website visitors think.
Having beautiful sliders on there moving every few seconds can be distracting sometimes if they cannot find the information they seek and they keep going back to looking at the slider. Before you know they will lose interest and click the back button.
What your visors think, can be seen by how much action they take on your website (and via where they drop off on google analytics). Are they calling your business, or buying your products and services? If they are you may want to revisit what is causing them to lose interest and make some changes.
- Your Visitors Don’t Care About Your Products or Services
You may be thinking “What the? Of course they are interested in my product or service, why else will they be there?” However think of it this way.
When a person visits your website they are likely to be there to solve a particular problem. They may be doing research into that problem and need help to understand that, before they begin to focus on the solution you are offering (ie your products or services).
If you look at your website copy and all you see is the words “we”, “our” and “us” threaded throughout then you have a problem and would potentially already be seeing visitors losing interest and clicking away from the site.
If your copy is also full of big words, industry jargon and non-specifics then again this could be off-putting to people.
It’s important to talk in the way that people speak, and use language they understand. When you do talk about your products and services, talk about them in relation to the problem people are trying to solve and help them imagine using the product or service.
- The Most Important Part of a Website Design, is the Dollars it Generates
Most people when they are getting their website designed, care most about the look and the feel, and getting a few bells and whistles. Website and graphic designers themselves can often be the worst advocates of this.
Really, your website should be designed by a marketer who has invested some time in learning about your market and has experience in what layouts work best for the goals you are trying to achieve.
The number 1 focus of the website should be the relevance to the visitor. It should show yours or the company’s personality, and hit the right level. Its no use having a corporate looking, boring website if your company is all about fun. A website should be designed to engage and interact with the visitor which will keep them on the website longer and more likely to take action with your business. This is most important in the copy on the website, the calls to action and the images on the page which all help your conversion.
A website that might be ugly to some people may be compelling to the right target market and this is something that needs to be considered upfront or during a website makeover.
